Best Hiking & Trails in the 209

You do not need to drive to Yosemite for a good hike, and the 209's trails are better than its reputation suggests. The range is unusual for one area code: valley-floor riparian forest, oak woodland, a volcanic mesa, giant sequoia groves, and a waterfall trail just outside a Yosemite entrance. What the region lacks is dramatic alpine scenery. What it has instead is trails you can walk in February.

Six of these sit in Calaveras County and they are the strongest cluster. Calaveras Big Trees offers two very different walks: the accessible 1.5-mile North Grove loop from the visitor center, and the South Grove, which is longer, emptier and closer to a cathedral. The Arnold Rim Trail climbs past Cougar Rock to San Antonio Falls. Natural Bridges is the region's oddest hike, dropping to a limestone arch with Coyote Creek running through a cavern you can swim into. Four more are in Tuolumne County, including Table Mountain near Jamestown, an ancient lava mesa that produces some of the best spring wildflower displays in the foothills, and the Red Hills, where serpentine soil supports rare flowers found almost nowhere else.

On the valley floor the trails are flatter and far more useful than they sound. Dry Creek in Modesto runs 7.8 miles of shaded creekside. Caswell Memorial near Ripon protects mature oak riparian forest. Cosumnes River Preserve near Galt has wetland boardwalks and is the best winter bird walk in the region, with sandhill cranes arriving in numbers.

Season is the thing to get right. Valley and low foothill trails are excellent November through April and genuinely dangerous in a July heatwave, when shade is scarce and afternoon temperatures pass 100. Wildflowers peak on Table Mountain and in the Red Hills in March and April. The higher Calaveras and Tuolumne trails are summer and autumn hikes, and snow can close the Big Trees access road in winter.

Two safety notes worth taking seriously: rattlesnakes are common on foothill trails from spring through autumn, and poison oak is everywhere below about 4,000 feet. Both are avoidable if you are watching where you put your hands and feet.
