Best Fishing in the 209

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is one of the best bass fisheries in the United States and it starts at the edge of Stockton. A thousand-plus miles of sloughs and channels, largemouth holding in the tules, stripers running the deep water, and sturgeon for anglers with patience. That alone would justify a fishing page. It is roughly a third of what the 209 offers.

The foothill reservoirs are the other headline, and they fish nothing like the Delta. New Melones covers 12,500 acres on the Stanislaus with depths over 400 feet and produces bass, trout and kokanee. Don Pedro is California's fifth-largest reservoir. New Hogan near Valley Springs is the striper lake, where schools boil on the surface and the lake record stands at 31 pounds. Camanche and Tulloch are the family-friendly options, warm water with good bank access. Between them, nine of these entries are foothill water.

Then there is river fishing, which is the region's least-known asset. The Mokelumne below Camanche Dam is a tailwater with a hatchery on it, and it runs winter steelhead and stocked trout. The Stanislaus offers cold-water trout in the foothills and bass lower down through Oakdale and Knights Ferry. The San Joaquin through Stockton sees spring striper pushups and the occasional Chinook. For anyone who prefers a short trip, Lodi Lake and the stocked three-acre lake at Oak Grove Park in Stockton produce genuinely well after a plant.

Two practical rules. Check current California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations before every trip, because Delta and river rules change by reach and by season and are not intuitive. And check reservoir levels before driving to a foothill lake, since launch ramps go out of service in low-water years and a long drive can end at a closed ramp.
