The 209's live entertainment scene is considerably bigger than its reputation, and the venues are the reason. This region supports two full performing arts centres, three genuine amphitheatres, four restored historic theatres and a set of bars that book real bands, which is not something most areas this size can claim.

The rooms are the story. The Gallo Center in downtown Modesto runs two houses, a 1,248-seat theatre and a 440-seat second stage, and books symphony, Broadway tours and comedy. Bob Hope Theatre is a restored 1930s art deco house in downtown Stockton that hosts Live Nation shows. Ironstone Amphitheatre sits among the vineyards in Murphys and pulls national touring acts under Gold Country sky. Fruityard near Modesto is an outdoor amphitheatre on ninety acres where every seat is within 200 feet of the stage. Weber Point is Stockton's waterfront venue and home to the Smooth Jazz Festival. Sonora's Sierra Repertory Theatre is a professional company running Broadway-calibre productions across two stages, including the historic Fallon House in Columbia.

Underneath the big rooms is a healthier small-venue circuit than most people expect, and this is where you will actually hear music on an ordinary weekend. Cast Iron Trading Co. in Stockton books live music Thursday through Saturday. Contentment Brewing in Modesto and Twin Rivers Saloon in Oakdale run regular bands. Ollie's in Lodi is a reliable bet. For nightlife rather than a show, the range runs from AVE on the Mile, an upscale cocktail lounge in Stockton, to The Old Corner Saloon on Highway 88 in Clements and Miners Lounge in Angels Camp, both genuine small-town bars with no pretence whatsoever. Vault in Modesto and Paradise in Stockton are the dance clubs, the latter running drag shows and karaoke.
