Best Dining in the 209

The 209's food scene doesn't get the credit it deserves. While the Bay Area and Sacramento hold the spotlight, the Central Valley quietly serves some of California's most honest, diverse and affordable food. This is farm country, and it shows up on the plate: produce that travelled twenty minutes instead of two days, and family kitchens that have been refining the same recipes since the 1970s.

Geographically the list breaks into three distinct scenes. The valley floor along Highway 99 is where the density is, with Stockton and Modesto together accounting for more than twenty of these restaurants and the deepest range in the region, from Dave Wong's walnut prawns since 1971 to Bud's Seafood Grille, named best in San Joaquin County every year since 1994. West of I-5, the small agricultural towns punch far above their size: Taqueria Castillo in Gustine, Ernie's Taqueria in Patterson, El Campestre DOS in Newman, and Agave Azul in Hughson, where the Lujan sisters brought their Zacatecas cooking in 2012. Then Highway 49 climbs into Gold Country, where the food comes with history attached, including the Hotel Leger saloon in Mokelumne Hill and Ripon Roadhouse in an 1886 Odd Fellows building.

Mexican food is the backbone here and deserves to be treated as a category rather than a cuisine. Stockton's Don Luis, Modesto's El Rosal, Escalon's Esmeralda's and Riverbank's El Ranchito, a family institution since 1977, are four genuinely different regional traditions, not four versions of the same menu. The same is true of the barbecue: Good Life BBQ in Stockton, Daddy's House of Ribs in Lockeford and Slick Fork in Hughson each smoke differently.

Beyond those, the list covers ground the valley is not known for and should be. Cariblue in Modesto is the region's only Caribbean kitchen, doing jerk chicken, oxtail and curry shrimp. German Guys in Stockton is a genuine schnitzel-and-bratwurst hole in the wall. Lotus Thai and Khmer in Stockton serves Cambodian alongside Thai, which reflects who actually lives in this city. Tandoori Grill in Ripon, Shirasoni's teppanyaki in Stockton and Midori's fusion in Tracy fill out a range that surprises people who have only driven through on Highway 99.

One practical note. Small-town kitchens in the 209 keep small-town hours, and several of the best places here close early, close Mondays, or close between lunch and dinner.
